Lavender essential oil has a sweet, refreshing aroma. The stems and leaves induce camphoraceous notes that are softened by the sweetness of the flowers. Lavender brings deep relaxation and encourages compassion and gentleness toward others.
When massaged into the scalp, lavender essential oil improves blood circulation, can prevent hair loss and promotes hair growth. Furthermore, lavender essential oil is a powerful moisturiser, antimicrobial and antiseptic. It moisturises the scalp, balances sebum production and is ideal for those who suffer from dandruff.

  • 8 – 10 drops lavender essential oil
  • 4 tsp of a carrier oil
  • Massage the blend into your scalp

Rosemary essential oil has a powerful effect. It's one of the freshest and pungent essential oils with its minty and woodsy scent. Rosemary’s aroma is instantly youthful and deliciously herbaceous.
Rosemary is packed with antioxidants which can prevent thinning hair and even graying hair. It’s another essential oil which promotes blood circulation, so it’s perfect for stimulating hair follicles and hair growth.
Furthermore, rosemary essential oil can help with over greasy scalps and hair as it tones down sebum production. It also clears pores, so it’s great for itchy scalps and dandruff relief.
*As a precaution, it is not recommended to use rosemary essential oil when you are pregnant or if you suffer from epilepsy.

To use rosemary essential oil for hair growth:
  • Heat 3 tsp of olive oil
  • Blend in 10 drops of rosemary essential oil
  • Use this blend as a hot oil treatment by blending it evenly over your scalp and through your hair
  • Wrap your hair in a towel that has been dipped in hot water
  • Leave it on for 30 minutes, then shampoo it out
  • It’s recommended to do this about once a month


Cedarwood essential oil has a warm, woodsy scent. It’s great for the treatment of hair loss and for dandruff control. In fact, a recent study has concluded that cedarwood essential oil, along with lavender, rosemary and thyme, is effective in Reversing Alopecia areata areata is a common autoimmune skin disease resulting in hair loss on the face and scalp.
Cedarwood is an ideal essential oil for hair growth because it balances the oil producing glands of the scalp. Thyme is a popular herb which has small, highly aromatic leaves and spikes of tiny pink flowers in high summer. When purchasing thyme essential oil, look for thyme linalool as it is an excellent skin softener. Avoid red thyme which contains thymol and can irritate the skin.
Thyme increases the blood flow to the scalp and rejuvenates hair follicles which promote hair growth. In fact, it is often added to shampoos and hair products aimed at preventing hair loss.
*Be aware that thyme is a potent oil so it should be used in moderation. Furthermore, it always should be blended with a carrier oil and even other essential oils.

Peppermint is a hybrid of spearmint and watermint and is the most pungent mint, by far. The essential oil has a cooling, powerful, menthol aroma with clean, sweet, top notes. Peppermint essential oil is known to revive depleted energy and to enhance positivity.
Peppermint essential oil increases blood flow and rejuvenates hair follicles which stimulate hair growth. Its cleansing action unclogs pores and allows for the normal flow of skin cells, which makes it perfect for those with a dry scalp.

The name “chamomile” comes from two Greek words ─ chamai meaning “on the ground” and melon meaning “apple.” This low growing herb has a wonderful, apple-like scent all around it. The essential oil has a pale, blue-green color and a fresh, soft-smelling scent with apple-like notes.  
There are two types of chamomile ─ Roman, and German. Both have similar properties, but we find Roman to be better for hair growth.
Chamomile essential oil is soothing in nature and has natural anti-inflammatory properties. Massage it directly into the scalp to relieve a dry and itchy scalp. Furthermore, it soothes and helps to eliminate dandruff, psoriasis and dermatitis.
Chamomile essential oil conditions hair and shields it from damage imposed by environmental pollutants. It’s a wonderful conditioning rinse, as it creates a golden shine.
The great thing about chamomile essential oil is that it is non-greasy, so you can use it often and do not have to wash it out unless you want to.

  • 2 tbsp jojoba carrier oil
  • Massage into your scalp as needed

  • Use as a final, conditioning rinse after washing your hair


This amazing plant is the giant of the sages. The clary sage plant produces tall spikes of lilac and pink flowers that have an incredibly potent, musky aroma. The essential oil has a musky, nutty and woody-sweet scent.
Clary sage is known for its phytoestrogen content, which contributes to hair growth and preventing or reversing premature balding.
Furthermore, when massaged into the scalp, clary sage essential oil normalizes oil production and can control dandruff.

  • Let it sit for 30 minutes, then shampoo out


The lemon’s peel is full of tiny sacs which contain the essential oils. The aroma is intensely fruity, citrusy, zesty and fresh with wonderfully light, fizzy top notes.
Lemon essential oil is a clarifying and drying oil ideal for an oily scalp. It’s good for treating dandruff or scalp acne.
Furthermore, lemon essential oil is antiseptic and antimicrobial, which helps to resolve secondary infections that often complicate acne and dandruff.

  • 5 - 6 drops of lemon essential oil

  • For oily hair, blend lemon essential oil with warm water and use it as a final rinse after washing and conditioning your hair.


The exotic fragrance of patchouli essential oil instantly transports you to faraway lands ─ India, Indonesia and the Phillippines, where the oil has been valued for centuries as a perfume. Patchouli essential oil is deep, earthy and sensual. Furthermore, its aroma is powerful, so only small amounts are needed when creating blends.
Patchouli essential oil’s anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties make it exceptional for treating many scalp and skin issues. People with dermatitis, dandruff and eczema can significantly benefit from patchouli oil because these ailments can be the underlying cause of hair loss.

Research has proved that tea tree essential oil has powerful antimicrobial and antifungal effects. Its aroma is fresh, pungent and medicinal, with sweeter woody notes as it evaporates.
Tea tree essential oil can be found in many dandruff treating products. It moisturizes the scalp and relieves itching and drying.
Tea tree oil works itself deep into the hair follicles. It unclogs them and helps with the normal flow of sebum. Furthermore, it is known for its antimicrobial properties, which aids in resolving fungal infections and scalp acne complicated by bacterial growths.

  • Add 4 – 5 drops to your shampoo or buy tea tree infused shampoo from a health shop.


Ylang ylang means “flower of flowers,” and is a tropical tree that produces its flowers in three colors ─ yellow, pink and mauve. Though all the flowers have highly scented petals, the yellow flowers yield the best-quality essential oil. Ylang ylang has a sweet, long-lasting, musky aroma, with sharp top notes.
Ylang ylang essential oil is particularly useful for fighting a dry and itchy scalp due to inadequate sebum production. Inadequate sebum production can lead to thin and brittle hair, and ultimately, hair thinning and loss.
Ylang ylang essential oil naturally stimulates sebum production which is great for moisturizing the scalp and the hair.

In India and Nepal, vetiver is planted to protect hillsides from erosion during the monsoon. The grass's tangled root system holds the soil together and is also the part of the plant that yields vetiver essential oil.
Vetiver essential oil comes from the root system of vetiver grass. This oil is thick and dark brown, with an aroma of the deepest earth, plus woody and smoky undertones. It is a potent aroma, so only a small amount is needed in blends.
Vetiver essential oil aids in the reduction of hair loss resulting from excessive heat in the body. Stress can cause the body to be heated and also may cause premature graying and balding. Found throughout northern Europe, the wild carrot has erect, hairy stems and odorless leaves which produce flat umbels of tiny white flowers in the late summer. The flowers die back leaving the “head” of pungent seeds which have been used for hundreds of years as a digestive tonic.
The essential oil from the seeds is musty, earthy and subtle, with woody notes as it evaporates.
Carrot seed essential oil is highly regarded for it’s detoxifying, nourishing and hormone regulating qualities which make it good for stimulating hair growth.

Cypress trees belong to one of the oldest plant families on Earth ─ the Cupressaceae, which is some 17 million years old. The trees can live for hundreds of years which have given them the name, sempervirens, meaning “ever-alive.”
Cypress essential oil is produced from the leaves and twigs of the tree and has a deep, earthy and smoky aroma with sharper fresh notes as it evaporates.
This essential oil can be found in many hair formulas for hair growth. Cypress essential oil can increase blood circulation and capillary strength which stimulates hair follicles for optimal hair growth.
